Dixon Hearne is the editor-in-chief of Delta Poetry Review. He writes in Louisiana, where he grew up along the quiet bayous and river traces. Crossing Over <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The downtowns were joined
\nby a narrow brick-and-steel bridge
\nacross the darkly beautiful Ouachita–
\nriver of life, river of death
\nsauntering south like a summer stroll,
\nthen raging and brimming
\nwith spring thaw,
\ncompletely indifferent
\nto human affairs on either side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crowds the mind with memories,
\nsense memories of time and place
\nnow all but obliterated by fickle
\ntastes and whim change.
\nFrom Western Union,
\nwhich hugged the bridge,
\nto the crisscross tracks at Five Points\u2014
\nreminder of days when streetcars
\ncarried shoppers and workers
\non their daily routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the wide sidewalks on either side,
\ntacky items fill showroom windows
\nwhere once the finest to be found
\nwas vainly displayed\u2014dreams and wishes.
\nNow Swept aside and relocated
\nto suburban hubs
\nof the beehive variety
\nin the name of progress.
\nthe fate of most large towns
\nnow rediscovering the value,
\nthe wisdom of town centers.
\nmalls now inverting,
\nstore entries on the outside,
\nreclaiming the village model
\nwhere shoppers stroll
\nin fresh, open air.
\nA new idea, many say
\nwhose knowledge
\nhas not yet ripened
