He is also Consulting Editor of CHA: AN ASIAN LITERARY JOURNAL. His poems have been published by CHA, ASIA LITERARY REVIEW, IN POSSE, and elsewhere. His first collection, SELL YOUR BONES, was published by Berlin&#8217;s PalmArtPress. Way back in the 20th century, he published the novel A MAN UNDER AUTHORITY. He also <\/em>had a separate career as an historian of the American Civil War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Hank Williams <br>\nAnd The Whipperwills <br>\nWhisper \u201cSweet Darlin\u2019, <br>\nGo To Sleep,<br>\nGood Night\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know those painted black steel <br>\nstairs you ascend, high heels <br>\ndangling in your weary hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have seen the noir seams <br>\nof your laddered stockings <br>\ngone crooked<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the swelling of your calves<br>\nthe tilt of your razor-edged skirt<br>\nthe way your left hand lifts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>your bob cut black hair<br>\nfrom where it kisses the nape<br>\nof your muscular, tango neck<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the naked, screwed-in bulb<br>\nflickering yellow messages<br>\ninto Morse Code for ghosts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>trying to try not to give up, at least<br>\nnot this particular whipperwill night<br>\nnot with Hank Williams watching<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from heaven<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>REID MITCHELL is a New Orleanian teaching in China.
