She enjoys travelling, genealogy, reading, and learning Italian in order to speak to and correspond with her newly-discovered cousins in Bergamo. Her latest book of poetry is EDGES. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:23px\"><br>Rooms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old floorboards creak<br>\nwith life after life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parquet lies deep in thought, <br>\nechoing footfalls <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in a house of few rooms.<br>\nStrife and merriment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>imprisoned in small spaces,<br>\nemerge in golden afternoons, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>filtering the oncoming dusk,<br>\nwelcoming fireflies and bats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedroom nights catch<br>\na corner of the moon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the shaved sunlight<br>\nof winter mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:23px\"><br>Windows<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something about walls<br>\ndemands space<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for distant vision\u2014sky,<br>\ncloud, and the light silence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of dragonflies in sunlit noons. <br>\nMy Italian grandmother<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>used to lean on the windowsill,<br>\nlooking down on the streets<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of West New York, waiting for cars,<br>\nwatching mothers walk to market,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>their children lagging behind,<br>\nclutching chalk for hopscotch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She knew that out there<br>\nwas a world beyond <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>mothballed linens, iron bedsteads, <br>\nscrubbed linoleum, plaster saints,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and pasta al dente.  I lift my head<br>\nabove my books to watch<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the ever-shifting horizon,<br>\nto view something beyond<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>word and desk, far from<br>\nthe syllables I\u2019ve sought since youth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>seeking the dappled truth of fog,<br>\nthe untranslatable language of rain. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donna Pucciani, a Chicago-based writer, taught English for many years before retiring to write full time.
