When he is not teaching high school English, he can be found in his backyard starting endless projects, or walking in the woods. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:23px\"><br>A Cure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father tells me about the sunlight, measures <br>\ndiminishment in vernal equivalent. When autumn<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>days grow raw and short, we plant before the frost. <br>\nIn spring we count the shoots poking through the straw. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At solstice, we cut off the pungent green stalks.<br>\nSummer tilts toward fall.  Now, a sharp sweetness <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sparks a fire. Dull tines pierce papery skin.<br>\nYellow leaves, brown hardneck, white roots &#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I plunge my turning fork deeper into the clay, <br>\nuprooting purple bulbs below. The sweetness <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again &#8211; different from the thorny caned raspberries<br>\nand the viny peas of July. It lingers long after<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve gathered the bulbs in bunches of five<br>\nto dry and cure from the wooden rafters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:23px\"> <br>Erratics<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An osprey shimmers above <br>\nchiselled granite and spruce.<br>\nHer piping cries echo<br>\noff tourmaline waves.<br>\nOver mountains a white sun<br>\nglinting on glacial castaways.<br>\nWhite shells on rocks below. <br>\nRockweed reanimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water recedes.<br>\nWater returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Water caresses <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; round stones by the <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;shore &#8211; restless<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;embrace of goodbye <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and hello.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Boegehold lives in Portland, Maine, with his wife and dog.
