{"id":2035,"date":"2020-04-27T01:34:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T01:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/?p=2035"},"modified":"2020-04-05T17:37:50","modified_gmt":"2020-04-05T17:37:50","slug":"steam-rising-by-kimberly-vargas-agnese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/2020\/04\/27\/steam-rising-by-kimberly-vargas-agnese\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Steam Rising&#8221; by Kimberly Vargas Agnese"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>She wears an all-at-once hat<br>(a cloud-colored, floppy, winged thing<br>that might flip up when it rains)<br>above an egg-shaped T-shirt:<br>white as a pair of newborn socks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just washed, tiny onesies<br>clean, unused<br>rest neatly in the dresser drawer next to the crib,<br>where a mobile waits to play music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brim shades her head and the baby in her belly<br>so she can decide on the perfect name<br>for the chubby toddler running around behind her closed lashes,<br>wearing a sailor suit and his grandfather\u2019s eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or maybe she\u2019s already seen the Ultrasound<br>and pink ruffles fill the closet of a little girl<br>who will someday pull chocolates<br>out of an Easter egg basket full of make-believe grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A middle-aged woman at the grocery store smiles.<br>\u201cWhen are you due?<br>You better rest while you still can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she can\u2019t imagine being more tired than she is right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At night, she wraps her arms around her stomach,<br>sings and hopes her baby can\u2019t hear<br>how the air is chopped into pieces<br>by the helicopter circling the street,<br>gently pushes the little bulge of an elbow back inside her belly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, there will be someone to tuck into bed\u2026<br>picture books and birthday parties\u2026<br>kindergarten\u2026 boys\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please, God, don\u2019t let this child do drugs.<br>Let her know she\u2019s loved\u2026<br>Make a way\u2026 prove that life is full of goodness\u2026<br>Let the air be warmer in the morning than it was today<br>Her hat hangs on a nail next to the window<br>where rain falls off the eaves and onto the glass<br>before the sun comes out<br>turns into steam rising,<br>hovers like a baby\u2019s breath<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>waiting for Tomorrow to be born<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\"><br><em>A Mexican-American poet residing in Fresno, CA, Kimberly Vargas Agnese loves walking barefoot and spending time outdoors.
