His poetry was awarded the Harry Hoyt Lacey Prize in Poetry (Fall 2015), and his writing has been published in 250+ publications in 28 countries. <a class=\"sbm-text link link-color accessible-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brandonmarlon.com\/\" target=\"linked\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.brandonmarlon.com<\/a><\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Country Barn<\/h3>\n<p>Cockcrow&#8217;s rays against red-painted siding<br \/>\nadd a fiery tincture, stark and arresting,<br \/>\nto an otherwise monotone surround<br \/>\nof swidden and forests pruned and pollarded,<br \/>\na quiet haven redolent of timber and hay<br \/>\nwhere each thread of sound<br \/>\nis distinctly discerned and townspeople<br \/>\ncome to rusticate or else when lost.<\/p>\n<p>At prandial hours, grazing livestock mosey<br \/>\nalong through sliding doors, past tractors<br \/>\nin various states of disrepair, keen on ensilage<br \/>\nto supplement their diets;<br \/>\nthey casually disregard the ranch hand,<br \/>\nimmersed in the sudorific ardor of labor,<br \/>\nforging a brand in the refiner&#8217;s fire.<\/p>\n<p>All the stalls and chutes are in adequate fettle,<br \/>\nalthough silos display the toll of the elements.<br \/>\nPewter wind chimes, decorative and melodic,<br \/>\ntaunt the aged weather vane with their newness<br \/>\neven as the windpump bemoans its missing blades.<\/p>\n<p>Local folk, salt of the earth, humble as a pebble,<br \/>\nheave bales and inhale the breeze,<br \/>\nglad to disburden their backs<br \/>\nevery so often and munch by the porch<br \/>\nsmoked jerky, guessing at the spice rub,<br \/>\nan unorchestrated symphony of neighing,<br \/>\nlowing, bleating, crowing, and clucking<br \/>\nconstant in the background, reverberating off<br \/>\nlofty rafters where spiders oversee proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Airport Lounge<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes reaching the designated gate<br \/>\nis a micro feat that feels macro, a private triumph<br \/>\nfor those surpassing the hectic havoc<br \/>\nof an international terminal at midday,<br \/>\nwhere people vie, jostle, queue,<br \/>\nsardines rushing to be canned in metal birds.<\/p>\n<p>This assembly of assorted cross-purposes<br \/>\nis but a symphony of haste and angst,<br \/>\na community of wanderers, random and non-replicable,<br \/>\nits members anxious for destinations<br \/>\nwhile reluctantly resigned to journeys,<br \/>\nthe real price we must pay.<\/p>\n<p>Many consider lounge a misnomer,<br \/>\nfor this is a hall of tension and dread;<br \/>\nnot all the duty-free liquor, smartphones, or flat screen TVs<br \/>\nlooping muted newscasts can distract the mind<br \/>\nfrom its uneasiness, from the sense of being<br \/>\ncorralled and harried, demoted to sheeple.<\/p>\n<p>In such a way station, where there are alternately<br \/>\nway too many seats or none available whatsoever,<br \/>\nthe wise befriend strangers so that time flies<br \/>\nfaster even than the 747 now preboarding<br \/>\npassengers with small children or special needs,<br \/>\nits jets set to entirely alter the atmosphere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brandon Marlon is a writer from Ottawa, Canada.
