AL&#8217;S electric bills and alcohol concentration were equally low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Has it been a month already?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;No, I think it&#8217;s longer than that, Mel. I half-expected that Al might find an air conditioner in the meantime.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Al? I don&#8217;t figure him that way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The balding, short-tempered owner wasn&#8217;t there. No one talked freely about the BAR when he was behind the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Do you want the usual?&#8221; asked Sylvia, the waitress and bartender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Al&#8217;s not coming in, is he?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;No. It&#8217;s Sunday, and he&#8217;s gone to the shore.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;As long as he&#8217;s not making the drinks, could you put a little more bourbon in mine?&#8221; asked Frank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They looked to the flatscreen above the bottles and mirror on the wall. The Phillies were behind again. Why bring that up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;How&#8217;s Rayette?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t ask, Mel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Is she talking to you ever since you smashed in her window?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That was two months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;No. I haven&#8217;t heard a thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Two months, huh? And not one of her usual putdowns?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Right.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mel sipped the bourbon and water that Sylvia pushed his way. &#8220;I always thought she was a little strange,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;The whole family&#8217;s odd, if you ask me. Her brother&#8217;s even stranger.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;You mean Otto?&#8221; questioned Sylvia, who took some interest while wiping the counter with a rag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Yeah, Otto.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;What&#8217;s the matter with him?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Frank made a sour face. Was it the drink or the reminder of Rayette&#8217;s younger brother? &#8220;Otto\u2019s still talking to me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><br><em>David Sydney is a physician.
