{"id":3887,"date":"2026-09-01T01:23:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T08:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/?p=3887"},"modified":"2026-08-03T11:24:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T18:24:45","slug":"otters-rafting-by-dorothy-johnson-laird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/2026\/09\/01\/otters-rafting-by-dorothy-johnson-laird\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Otters Rafting&#8221; by Dorothy Johnson-Laird"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Two otters turn together in the water,<br>dip and rise, deeper and longer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">aquatic acrobatics,<br>rolling over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They climb and sliding off nearby rocks,<br>relishing the glide, the sudden rush of cool water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With eyes closed, they swim faster,<br>directed forward, diving for small fish on their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They dart ahead in the early blue night<br>brown fur shining at the river\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They go, streamline and direct,<br>bubbles form around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they pause, eyes discerning and alert,<br>before easing onto their backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the sun on their bellies,<br>They gaze at the pink sky above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They lie there, floating,<br>heads peeping just above the water line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More otters gather &#8211; draw close to form a shelter from the wind<br>They grasp paw to paw, gently flowing on their backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They connect in touch;<br>in the still, clear, light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em>Dorothy Johnson-Laird is a poet and social worker who lives in New York City.
