Since becoming a father his biographical statement has less time to be interesting.<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Gardener<\/h3>\n<p>Pesticide garden, ocean of plastic.<br \/>\nBut soil crescent moons crown her fingers.<br \/>\nHer hair swims the carbon monoxide clouds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Breath<\/h3>\n<p>Trees taken from the wind<br \/>\nand buildings burden the clouds.<br \/>\nSilence sounds the language of ants<br \/>\nout of air, dead breath in our ear.<br \/>\nBoxes of plastic flowers line<br \/>\nthe concrete sidewalk, and we<br \/>\nare the heel that crushes us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Acceptance<\/h3>\n<p>In the grocery store the everything<br \/>\nwells up inside you, hollows your gut,<br \/>\nand dizzies your head with the vastness<br \/>\nof love so useless it cannot hold<br \/>\npins to a map or people to the earth.<br \/>\nThere you are in the produce aisle<br \/>\nscavenging among the somnambulant,<br \/>\nknowing that we all will die,<br \/>\nthat the sun one day will swallow<br \/>\nthe earth, and the ones you love<br \/>\nare incandescence in your eyes,<br \/>\nlike these fluorescent lights that float<br \/>\nabove the stench of the back aisle butcher.<br \/>\nYou did all you knew how to do. Now<br \/>\nslip some ice cream into your cart,<br \/>\na flavor you\u2019ve never tried.<br \/>\nTake it home for your kids to devour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Todd Heldt is a librarian in Chicago.
