{"id":430,"date":"2018-10-10T03:07:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T03:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/?p=430"},"modified":"2018-09-05T03:12:36","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T03:12:36","slug":"stars-and-strictures-by-paul-reyns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/2018\/10\/10\/stars-and-strictures-by-paul-reyns\/","title":{"rendered":"Stars and Strictures by Paul Reyns"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Paul Reyns has been published in a handful of venues.<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Stars and Strictures<\/h3>\n<p>The first time I saw a Confederate flag<br \/>\nwas on the back of my uncle\u2019s pick-up<br \/>\nafter we got out at the hardware store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice,\u201d I said, because the paint job<br \/>\nwas in fact impressive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBet you don\u2019t see those too often,\u201d he told me.<br \/>\nI took a photo with my camera and sent it to my father.<\/p>\n<p>In the lumber yard my uncle took the call.<br \/>\n\u201cAre you kidding,\u201d he said, \u201cit won\u2019t get him shot<br \/>\n\u2013 this is the South.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that all about,\u201d I said, carrying two-by-fours under my arm.<br \/>\n\u201cYour father thinks I\u2019m going to turn you into a plantation owner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say that,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>We fixed a tenant\u2019s door frame.<br \/>\nThen my uncle went to Walmart to pick up labor.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned he pulled me aside and told me they were Mexican.<br \/>\n\u201cThey won\u2019t know the difference,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nI asked him what he meant.<br \/>\nAfter that, I gave one of them my toolbelt.<\/p>\n<p>We worked until the sun went down and then kept on.<br \/>\nDinner we ate on top of the folded-down flag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeen here five years,\u201d the taller one said.<br \/>\n\u201cIsn\u2019t anywhere we get better treatment than with your paps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let him make the connection.<\/p>\n<p>Do I still ride in my uncle\u2019s rig?<br \/>\nThere\u2019s not a day goes by<br \/>\nI don\u2019t tell myself I know better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Reyns has been published in a handful of venues. &nbsp;
