Clare Chu was raised in Malta and England, and has adopted Los Angeles as her home. She is an art curator, dealer, lecturer and writer who has authored and published twelve books and numerous academic articles on Asian art. This year she was a participant in San Miguel Poetry Week. Her poetry is featured in a continuing collaboration with Hong Kong-based calligraphic and landscape painter Hugh Moss, in which poet and artist expand traditional media boundaries. Her poetry is published or is forthcoming in The Comstock Review, The Esthetic Apostle, The Raw Art Review, Cathexis Northwest Press and 2River View.<\/em><\/h6>\n

How to Fry Okra<\/h3>\n

Last weekend, Sabiqah couldn\u2019t gather her words,
\nreluctant to admit she was homeless again,
\ntheir \u2018Welcome\u2019 mat covered by a blanket of ash,<\/p>\n

that after his third stroke, her husband Frank
\ncame home from the hospital
\nwith a hankering for fried okra,
\njust like his MeeMaw made,<\/p>\n

that she refused him,
\nbecause she was angry he\u2019d been back to hospital,
\nbecause in Bangladesh she\u2019d always made Dharosh Bhaji,
\nbecause this was the South \u2014 his home,<\/p>\n

that Frank was petulant with her,
\nwent downstairs to the empty apartment
\nwhere her mother, lately converted, newly passed,
\nhad lain for a week in the scorching heat,<\/p>\n

that he fried a skillet of okra,
\ndipped in buttermilk, dredged in cornmeal,
\nmanaged to set the pan alight,
\npoured water on flaming peanut oil,<\/p>\n

and with enthusiasm \u2014 or so it seemed to Sabiqah \u2014
\nburnt their house down in its entirety.<\/p>\n
