{"id":632,"date":"2019-01-01T18:36:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-01T18:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/?p=632"},"modified":"2018-12-27T00:34:12","modified_gmt":"2018-12-27T00:34:12","slug":"prehistoric-by-krisan-murphy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/ruescribe\/2019\/01\/01\/prehistoric-by-krisan-murphy\/","title":{"rendered":"Prehistoric by Krisan Murphy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Krisan Murphy lives in North Carolina and writes about her childhood in Mississippi.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prehistoric<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ours is<br>the long dirt driveway<br>where the mississippi sun<br>beats sweat <br>out of my brothers and me<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>running, jumping, chasing<br>evaporates salty beads<br>sliding down our temples<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>we cool under<br>spreading branches<br>of an oak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a rusty trike, a dismantled buggy,<br>a red wagon<br>assembles into a spaceship<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dreaming of the moon<br>I tug two astronauts<br>to the launch pad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>red dirt<br>clings to our bare feet<br>as we work<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>cotton bale clouds<br>darken, cool, and warn us<br>but we three stand<br>in a sandy hole<br>waiting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lifting grimy hands<br>to catch the first<br>gift of heaven<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a single drop<br>then<br>pelting, drenching, drowning rain<br>fills our pot with gold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hollering and dancing, <br>squishing mud with our toes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the storm ceases<br>and steam rises<br>from the parched earth<br>twigs and little hands<br>stir malleable clay<br>to form <br>creatures of our imagination<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>matted hair<br>dries<br>turns shorts orange<br>sitting in the puddle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at bedtime<br>scrubbed and fed<br>slipping between clean sheets<br>i dream <br>of tomorrow<br>when the screen door will slam<br>behind me <br>when i <br>go outside and play<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Krisan Murphy lives in North Carolina and writes about her childhood in Mississippi.
