{"id":803,"date":"2021-01-15T01:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-15T08:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/truechili\/?p=803"},"modified":"2021-01-03T12:43:31","modified_gmt":"2021-01-03T19:43:31","slug":"from-the-kitchen-window-by-dale-champlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/truechili\/2021\/01\/15\/from-the-kitchen-window-by-dale-champlin\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;From the Kitchen Window&#8221; by Dale Champlin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>When I first saw this kitchen, so far from my<br>New York walk-up, I could picture Mavis, Daniel\u2019s Ma,<br>clear as day\u2014her attempts at domesticity\u2014<br>the red-checkered curtains, Brillo-polished<br>cast-iron stove, whitewashed walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a tomato spattered index card.<br>It looks like chile was one of her favorites.<br>I soak beans, black, kidney and pinto, fire-roast<br>peppers, wash off the black skin, add plenty<br>of garlic, onions, tomatoes, and cayenne.<br>The first taste burns my tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the kitchen window, I fixate<br>on the chicken run, the strut and squabble<br>almost human. They tussle quarrelsome<br>and miserly over a prized grasshopper<br>or blade of spring grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking out over the pasture,<br>how still I become. In middle-distance<br>a mirage rises\u2014a pool of mercury shimmer,<br>cloud shadows lace the cropped foothills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eagles soaring on updrafts, high<br>as non-existent cloud cover, survey me<br>through the window. Their all-seeing eyes<br>make me out plain as anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mesmerized by Daniel\u2019s tumbler glittering<br>in the dish rack, I shuffle and glide<br>through morning, light-stepping to Phillip Glass<br>on the classical station, the repetition echoed<br>by mourning doves in the scrub oaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can almost disregard the revolver<br>on the countertop, the coils of bailing and barbed<br>wire, oil-soaked shotgun cleaning rags,<br>rat droppings in the corners, the crackle of black widow cobwebs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\"><br><em>Ever since Dale Champlin&#8217;s daughter married a bull rider she&#8217;s been writing cowboy poems.
