{"id":944,"date":"2023-01-15T00:58:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-15T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/truechili\/?p=944"},"modified":"2023-01-10T10:29:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T17:29:55","slug":"elegy-for-horses-by-dale-champlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underwoodpress.com\/truechili\/2023\/01\/15\/elegy-for-horses-by-dale-champlin\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Elegy for Horses&#8221; by Dale Champlin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">The heart wants \/ her horses back<br>\u2014Ada Limon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Everywhere a fly settles,<br>a twitch on the glossy flank\u2014<br>the chocolate horse, past her prime,<br>sides heaving like the cheeks of a trumpeter,<br>patiently waits for an apple or carrot,<br>pilfered from my mother\u2019s Frigidaire.<br>I spider-leg up the dirt road<br>where muddy water runs down<br>trickling in a tire rut, meandering<br>from side to side snake-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have nothing to do but hang from the<br>paint-flecked gate. It creaks. A wasp<br>exits a bullet hole in the galvanized fence post.<br>The mare rushes toward me. One horseshoe<br>clicks on a rock. Up close, her long-lashed eye,<br>dome glassy as a fortuneteller\u2019s crystal ball,<br>reflects me, the weedy pasture, clouds puffing<br>along the horizon. The apple rests temptingly<br>on my outstretched palm. She lips it and chomps,<br>pumps a delighted huff through flared nostrils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How that last summer, the mare taught me,<br>a teenage virgin, to ride bareback\u2014<br>the pleasure of sex without penetration<br>and betrayal. I was wild, crazy with speed.<br>And later, night hurtling, clinging to a man\u2019s<br>warm leathers, my hands clasped<br>in front of his slim waist, I jockeyed\u2014<br>the roar of motorcycle vibration<br>between my knees\u2014his heartbeat<br>close under my anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There she was every time nuzzling my palm.<br>Was she beautiful without me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\"><br><em>Dale Champlin, an Oregon poet, has poems in The Opiate, Timberline Review, Pif, Willawaw, and elsewhere.
