“Night Guard” by Mirah Harim

My dentist tells me
I need to guard my own mouth
from my own teeth.
They war with each other
while I sleep.

And I wonder what else my
limbs and tendons,
guts and intestines,
red cells and white cells
plot behind my back.

And I wonder, too, about Men
on buses,
and park benches,
in court houses,
and white houses.

What other forces plan
domination
over my body?

While I sit.

While I sleep.
